Bekking & Blitz | Katsushika Hokusai | Under the Wave off Kanagawa

An art card by Bekking & Blitz featuring a reproduction of one of the most iconic works in Japanese art history: Under the Wave off Kanagawa (approx. 1830–1832), better known as The Great Wave, by Katsushika Hokusai.

The print depicts an enormous wave about to crash down upon small fishing boats, whilst Mount Fuji stands almost motionless in the background. The power of nature takes centre stage. The impressive wave form, the deep blue tones and the dynamic composition make the work instantly recognisable worldwide.

The work forms part of the series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji and is a masterpiece of Japanese printmaking (ukiyo-e). In this piece, Hokusai demonstrates how movement, simplicity and refined details can combine to create a timeless image. The work has had a major influence on modern art and design.
