music box | The Wilhelmus | Dutch national anthem | Fridolin Hymns
The Wilhelmus is the Dutch national anthem, composed around 1568-1572 during the Eighty Years’ War. It is the oldest national anthem in the world still officially in use. The lyrics form an acrostic: the first letters of the fifteen verses spell out “WILLEM VAN NASSOV”. The musical mechanism is mounted on a small wooden board, giving the melody a louder and richer sound. A truly Dutch gift or souvenir!
