Smoke on the Water was released by Deep Purple in 1972 on the album Machine Head. The riff is probably the most played guitar riff in the world and the first one every budding guitarist learns. The song is based on a true story: the fire at the Montreux Casino during a Frank Zappa concert in 1971, when smoke drifted over Lake Geneva.
