Schubert's Ave Maria was composed in 1825 as "Ellens dritter Gesang", based on a poem from Walter Scott's "The Lady of the Lake". Although not originally a religious song, its heavenly melody is beloved worldwide as one of the most beautiful classical pieces ever. One of the most performed melodies in the world.
