Maurice Ravel's Boléro was composed in 1928 as a ballet for Ida Rubinstein. A single theme, repeated seventeen times, progressively louder and with more instruments, leading to an overwhelming fortissimo finale. Ravel himself called it "a piece without music" — yet it is one of the most performed classical works in the world.
