The overture to Carmen was composed by Georges Bizet for the opera of the same name (1875). The fiery, Spanish-tinged melody immediately sets the tone for the dramatic story of the free-spirited Carmen. Bizet died only three months after the premiere, without knowing that his opera would become a world classic.
